Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, Not for the Faint of Heart

"For the boiling breakers are ever dashing themselves madly between the rocks hundreds of feet beneath, and the rope bridge is thrown about by the wind like a fabric of thread.  Few trust themselves upon this airy fabrication but Mr. Wilson and I for the honour of old Kentucky braved all the terrors-and passed to and from the rock."- Charles Leonard Thomassan 1851 following a visit here.

And for the honour of all of Ontario, Canada.....Ms. Deborah Lee Hannah and Ms. Angela O'Shanahan (McQuillan) also braved the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge.  A very popular, but very scary, but doable, tourist attraction on the coast of Northern Ireland in the County Antrim.
It is 20 meters long, with two planks to walk on and ropes to hold, and hangs 30 meters above the rocks below.

We must first pay for the exciting opportunity of only 5 pounds each.
Our bus tour driver gave us one hour to walk to it, 15 minutes from the gate, and 15 minutes back, and half an hour at the sight.  Truly, not enough time but we did it.
One word:  WOW!!

Follow the trail they said.  Gorgeous along the coastline.

Keep going they said.  Look at the great scenery.  Green pastures all around.  I wonder if there are any sheep here who would like to be famous on my wee blog?

Can we almost be there?

From the picture below, our wee bus is on top of this cliff and the path we have been following leads us  along the edge of these very high cliffs.  The sun is shining and the waves are crashing on the beach and the rocks below....it is awesome.

Another wee path on stones and down hill.  It is definitely a ways to walk.

But now I think I can see something?

Yes....I think I can see a bridge of some sort.  What are those little things?

They are people on the bridge!
Oh my!  Is that the bridge we are crossing?
Oh yeah!

Don't look down!
Oops....I looked down.
Yikes.

Scared look on my face half way across.....because I was scared.  However, I am not going home and saying I didn't do it.
"Can I get off now....did you get the photo?"

Wee Debbie says she didn't have time to be scared.  She just stepped off and went for it.
She is a superstar!

Two little birds tucked in the rocks.

How silly, that is me taking photos of those little birds.
Holding on for dear life....but I still had to get the picture for my 'pet friendly' blog readers!

Deb and I made it onto the other side of the bridge.

It was thought that over 350 years the bridge has been built many times to get to this island of Carrickarede.  Possible salmon fisherman began occupying this island and originally built the first bridges.

The Island and bridge from above.  It sure looks high from here.
Oh yeah it is high.

We did it!

"Paint me purple and call me Happy," finally a photo of a cute wee Irish sheep.

Now we have to race to catch the bus.....I can barely see it.
Priceless opportunity.
