Carrickfergus Castle

Our first stop on our Ireland Coast tour was a half hour bus ride out of Belfast to a small town called Carrick Fergus.  The ancient Carrickfergus Castle is at the entrance of the town.  A quick 15 minute photo stop and we are off to further discover the coast.

Built during the Norman invasion by Lord John de Courcy, in the year 1100.  It has been attacked by the Scots, Irish, English and French.  The last time was during World War II.

The statue below is of King William III also known as William of Orange.  He took over the castle and chased out King James II, a Catholic, as well as any hope for the Catholics of Ireland around 1690.

"Is he shooting at us?"

Carrickfergus Castle is one of the best preserved in the UK.

The paparazzi have found me again!

The Castle is now surrounded on three sides by the northern shores of the Belfast Lough (river).
I love this picture I took......I would guess the tide is out?

Dying to go in....but no time.  Deb taking a quick peek in.

Back on the bus and continuing on to the coast.
