Now that our bellies have a wee bit of sustenance, we are off.
Green....everywhere we look. Flowers are blooming. The sun is out, a chill in the air, dressed warm with umbrella in hand, it is perfect.
Just off Princes Street, the Yonge Street of Edinburgh, is a park in a valley, made from glaciers, at the foot of the Edinburgh Castle. At one time it was a lake. I learn all this from the friendly, social Scottish people.
Statues dot the walk ways and green grass for many, many acres.
The castle dominates the top of the Royal Mile. From below it is very difficult to get the entire castle in one shot. In the photos to come, they represent many angles of the castle. Of course to get the entire view....you might need to visit Edinburgh.
Each day on the bus into the city, I see this great old house that I want to stop and check out....and of course photograph.
The street is called "Bell's Brae" the little community is called Dean's Village we think.
A small river runs from the bottom of this 18th century building, gently flowing over a little falls that continues under the bridge that we bus over each day.
I thought this neat house would be empty for some reason but someone actually lives here. It is beautiful. Quaint was the word I would use, except that when we saw it from below, it was huge.
This is still only half of it from the back. But I love the 'castle' look to it.
A view of the community from the bridge. The colours, the chimneys, the different and same shapes.
The trails down by the river go for miles. It is hard to believe that we are just a few minutes walk to the busy streets of Edinburgh.
Moss and ivy and green everywhere.
What a glorious day.
Back on Princes Street with a restaurant that has a huge bull on the ground level outside, and this cow trying to escape from the grill!
"Faith is the strength by which a shattered world shall emerge into the light."- Helen Keller
A Scottish Gaelic cross, is a symbol of a cross with a ring surrounding the intersection. It is used as protection from evil. The tradition of erecting a stone cross like this began in the 8th century.
Below is the modern version of the Scottish Gaelic cross.
A view of a random statue in the park with Edinburgh Castle looming in the background.
The Scott Monument, below, is the largest monument to a writer in the world.
Sir Walter Scott Monument is 200 feet high and can be climbed.....if you would so desire. There are 287 steps with platforms for awesome views of Edinburgh. In the very centre of this monument is a statue of Sir Walter Scott himself.
"Look back, and smile on perils past."- Sir Walter Scott
Another view of the castle.
The Scottish National War Memorial.
At the bottom of the bronze plaque behind this soldier with the kilt, is a line from the poem by E. A. Mackintosh, "The Creed."
"If it be life that waits I shall live forever unconquered; if death I shall die at last strong in my pride and free."
E. A. Mackintosh was a 23 year old soldier who died at the Battle of Cambrai in 1917.
Twisted manicured hedges snake along the walk ways.
Thomas Guthrie greets everyone on entry through the gates of the Edinburgh Gardens.
This statue has the following inscription:
'An eloquent preacher of the gospel. Founder of the Edinburgh Original Ragged Industrial Schools, and by tongue and pen, the apostle of the movement elsewhere. One of the earliest temperance reformers. A friend of the poor and of the oppressed.'
The North Bridge, which is our bus stop to get off, to explore Edinburgh. If we walk towards these buildings we are heading to the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, and Holyrood House.
This is our view getting back on the bus to go home. If we missed our bus and continues to walk forward we would be on Princes Street, the Edinburgh Gardens, The Sir Walter Scott Monument, as well as the train and bus stations.
And oh yeah....Pizza Express of course.
