Our New Winter Destination.....Cadiz, Spain

Before we arrived in Spain, Deb and I were not certain Spain would be for us.  No particular reason, it just wasn't on our 'bucket list.'
Were we wrong.
Spain and it's people and towns are wonderful.
Add it to your list.....because we did.

Cadiz, Spain is located in the southern most part of Western Europe.  It is the oldest continuously-inhabited city in Spain.
A population of 128,000, but again the feeling of a small town.
A fantastic walking/touring town.  Deb and I did a huge 'loop' starting along the water and heading into the market area.  Cadiz is a peninsula, three sides of beautiful sea.

Many monuments and churches and many, many torres....'towers' to see.

The very first sight we came to was the Monument to the Constitution of 1812.

In the 18th century, Cadiz had more than 160 towers that the local merchants used to watch for arriving ships.

Torre Tavira (tower) had to be climbed because Debbie loves climbing??  We didn't count but we believe it was 178 steps to the top.
With panoramic views that are ALWAYS worth the price of admission and wear and tear on the legs.
And we were not disappointed.

Our ship, and many of the towers that still stand.  Many are an extentions to their homes, rather than individual towers.

The beaches are extraordinary.  The most popular in Cadiz is La Playa de la Caleta.  Some scenes from the James Bond movie, "Die Another Day" were filmed here.

The Cathedral of Cadiz.  Original church was built in 1260.

Views of the cityscape.

Walking along the board walk, with the birds, waves crashing, smells of flowers.....doesn't get better than that.

Trees and vines that shame "Jack and the bean stalk."

A trip to the Market is full of surprises and photo ops.

A beautiful church tucked along a green space area.

I could hear this bird before I could see it.  How excited and thrilled I was when I realized it was an exotic bird.  Then Debbie had to drag me away from the area to stop taking pictures.

This hungry bird, or better known as a Little Egret was searching and fishing in the waves when we walked along the board walk.

Exotic plants and giant trees located all through the city, supposedly brought to Spain by Columbus from the New World.

Ben and Jerry's ice cream in the Plaza de la Cathedral.  It was bright and hot out....thus the squinting.

Plaza de San Francisco and San Francisco Church and Convent (below). Built in 1566 and renovated in the 1700's.  On the day we visited, there was a Christmas market set up.  Here (pictured above) is where I bought two beautiful original handmade mugs.

Two young spanish boys playing soccer using the cash machine as a net......unfortunately we had to disrupt the game for only a few minutes to get euros.
