The Countryside of Ireland and the Burren

For only 20 Euros we saw so much of Ireland on our bus tour.  I believe, besides the coast, my favourite photo ops are the ruined Abbeys.  They have such a romance to them.

Below this ruined Abbey is built right beside a bog.

The hills of Ireland are criss crossed with these lines.  The tour operator told us they are called 'Famine Walls.'  When the people were starving during the Great Famine ( one million died) the English believed that they had to work to help themselves.  Thus they had them build stone walls straight up the hills for a penny a day?  The problem is there was no need for these walls.....it was a work make project.  Tony Blair apologized to the people of Ireland when he was in power for the lack of English help at that time.

The stone walls between farms is another thing.  Every wall in Ireland was built by hand, and still is.  This area has an enormous deposit of slate stone with very little soil on it.  Thus many walls.

Who is the red head with Debbie?  Oh....it's me?  New do for moi.

A heron on the beach.

Below are pictures of the area known as the Burrens.  Rock and about 350 square kilometres of it.

Ancient burial grounds are abound in this area.  They believe over 3500 years old.  It looks like the moon in this part of Ireland.
