Unknown to us as we headed to the cliffs, all this dark vegetation is heather, which is used to make jewelry for one, but also a haven for many, many species of birds at the reserve. In the autumn it is a spectacular sight of blazing purple.
The entire island of Anglesey has been designated as an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.' With incredible beaches on the east and dramatic cliffs on the west. The 'Anglesey Coastal Path' is a 200 km path. They say you can walk it comfortably in 12 days? What a trip that would be? We are thinking about it for another adventure.
Below is a sheer cliff of solid granite. Very impressive with views of the South Stack Lighthouse on the wee island below. There are about 400 steps down the cliff to get to the bridge to cross over to the lighthouse....that is closed at this time of year. I know Deb is relieved.
I read that at one time there was only a rope suspension bridge that you had to cross, the 30 meters of sea, to get to the lighthouse. Yikes.
A glorious day to enjoy the water from high above. Absolutely beautiful.
A total of 870 miles of paths are available to enjoy on the Wales Coast Path.
The granite cliffs of South Stack are outstanding. These cliffs contain some of the oldest rocks in Wales. Dating nearly 600 million years.
It is incredible to imagine 4000 birds here? We must visit again but a wee bit later in the Spring...around April-May they suggested.
We could have also headed up higher on the hills to get even better views.....but I was happy not to climb any higher on this day. We actually had taken a taxi from town, as it was about 5 km from our hotel. Making a date for Paul (the taxi driver) to come and retrieve us in about an hour and a half. Had we known how spectacular it was, we would have stayed longer. Next time.
Deb has been working at getting rid of a cold.....so here she sits with awe-inspiring views to occupy her while I searched for more bird photos. What a spot she chose.
I climbed a bit higher and took these shots of the coast. Such jagged incredible cliffs....Love it.
All of it!!!
