Feeding the Beautiful Icelandic Horses

Scotland and Ireland have sheep everywhere.  But Iceland has 80,000 Icelandic horses that roam all through the countrysides.  The sheep are actually lambing right now and are rare to see because it is cold here and they are indoors.  But the horses.....

Icelandic horses are a small pony size horse, that are specifically breed here in Iceland.  One of the oldest breeds of horses in the world.  Brought here in the 9-10th centuries by the Scandinavian settlers.  Not only are they known for 'show' but are great, hardworking farm horses as well.

The Icelandic horse is iconic here.  Like no other horse we have seen.  Identified by their characteristic full manes.

An inquisitive but incredibly colourful tabby cat of some sort.  Our tour guy told us that the cats of Iceland came from Ireland?  He is guarding the horses.

Debbie, fearless animal lover, was teaching me to feed the horses.  Something I have never done, nor really cared to in case it takes my wee fingers off!
But I am determined to try to get over my terror and do it.....such a wee baby I am.

About 8 attempts later, this poor loving animal got to eat the piece of bread and
YES.... I FED AN ICELANDIC HORSE!!!!
Only lost 2 fingers in the process.

They have a double coat developed for extra insulation in the cold Icelandic temperatures.  Many different and unusual combination of colours on these gentle creatures.  Over 35 different colours to be seen.  This was the closest and most hands on we experienced while in Iceland.  What a treat.

A beauty to behold.

The puppy loved to have his picture taken.  He was a character, but didn't quite sit for his photo op.

There he is...what a cutie.  Also, hanging out with the horses.

This fella is my favourite because of his tolerance and gentleness when I was working up the courage to keep my hand near his, with the spirit of love, big teeth?

Awe.....build another pen, we have an Icelandic pony coming home to the hobby farm.
