Spectacular Waterfalls in Iceland

Fed by the glaciers in Iceland there are over 30,000 waterfalls that tumble over huge mountain peaks.  Unbelievable.  Some are small trickles and others have monstrous volumes of water that cascade through and over the rocks.  Below are two spectacular waterfalls that we saw on our 'Golden Circle Tour' in Iceland.

Below is the 'Gullfoss' waterfall in southwest Iceland.  Thought to be the most beautiful, it originates from the Hvitavatn glacier lake about 40 km north of the falls.

This view below is taken closer at eye level and shows the dramatic drops.
It flows over three levels of rock plateaus.  It drops first 11 meters, then another 21 meters and finally a 32 meter drop.  Incredible.

Another awe-inspiring waterfalls is called Vatnsleysufoss in Icelandic or Faxi waterfall for short.  Similar to Gullfoss, but with one tier of rock plateau to cascade over.  Also fed by the glaciers, the river above it is called Tungufljot.

This ladder was built adjacent to this falls to assist the salmon population to make their way upstream to mate.

A similar picture showing the green water that is crystal clear and apparently perfectly fine to drink...as well.  Right out of the tap in Iceland?

Here I am taking photos up close but I realize, so do the other two gals I am with, that the tour bus is leaving in a few minutes!  I have a bit of a walk around, or I can climb the hill where the rest of the group is taking the long distance photos from?  Climbing it is!

A lot longer, higher and steeper than I thought?  What am I thinking?

Made it!!!!
.....Sigh....
