"For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel's sake. The great affair is to move."- Robert Louis Stevenson
The city hall is located just inside the gate of the Old town at the foot of the Firewatch tower. It is an enormous building with a Victorian look to it. Built in 1896 in the year of the Hungarian Millennium.
The statue, as you may recognize from a previous post, greets visitors as the enter the building.
I have tried to find out who this fellow is, but unfortunately the markings on the base are worn and very difficult to translate. I will keep you posted if I find out.
The Storno house, below, sits directly across from the town hall. Dubbed 'one of the most marvellous buildings in Sopron', the Storno house was built in 1417. A tour through, no photos allowed, provided us with insight into the lavish life style and a view of priceless artifacts from that time period.
King Matthias stayed here in 1482-1483. He was the King of Hungary and Croatia from 1458, from the age of 14 until his death.
Franz Liszt, was a 19th century composer, virtuoso pianist, as well as teacher. He played a number of concerts here. Born in 1811 in a village within the Sopron county. Liszt's piano teacher was a pupil of Beethoven.
After a few owners, the Storno family, who began as chimney sweeps, started a business of restoring art, including Romanesque and Gothic monuments. Both the father and at least one son's masterpiece art work are displayed within the rooms the family lived in.
