"Rome was not built in one day."-John Heywood
When I think Roman conquests, I do not think of Hungary? But they were here.
The Roman walls surround, in part, the Old town. Much of it has been only discovered in the 1800-1900's. Renovation of the walls are a constant in Sopron.
These walls, pictures directly below, are located behind the Town Hall. During the building of the Town Hall parts of the walls were unearthed.
The Roman Scarbantia, Sopron today, was founded at a cross road between Gyor, Hungary and Vienna, Austria along what is referred to as the Amber road. Named for the precious amber that was transported along this ancient trade route between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. Dubbed the 'gold of the north.'
The townscape of ancient Sopron was planned around 50 AD. The patterns of the streets in the Old town have not changed since their origin. As a matter of fact, as we walk the streets of Sopron's Old town it feels very much like the city of Rome.
