Although nesting dolls are traditionally considered Russian they can be traced back to 1000 AD in China. At that time they were more boxed like and were functional as well as decorative.
The 1700 brought more of a doll likeness to the design. Traditional Russian nesting dolls are meant to look like a Russian woman in traditional Russian dress.
The floral designs on these nesting dolls are more of an Hungarian design.
This one is my souvenir from Sopron I purchased in the Old city.
There are a total of 5 dollies all nestled into the one above. She is a wee beauty and she is coming to Canada.
