Little Debbie's Corner - Goat Church and Chapter House

The impressive church standing on the Main Square in Sopron is known as
the Goat Church.

A beautiful church that we have enjoyed looking at many times while wandering around the Old Town of Sopron and while enjoying lunch at the restaurant right across from the church.

The church was built around 1280 by the Franciscan friars along with the Chapter House of the friary next to the church.

In 1802 the Benedictine monks took over the church and monastery.

The church plus the building of the former friary is now owned by the Hungarian Benedictine Congregation.

Crest on the outside of the church.  The church has been called the Goat Church because the oral traditions says it was built from a treasure dug up by a goat.

The church was refurbished in Baroque style and in 1754 the Pulpit was made.

In 1751 the high alter was made.

Several noble families chose the church as a family burial site.  Therefore, under the central nave of the church is a crypt with several vaults.  In 1780 burials under churches was banned.

Archeological explorations unveiled masks and figures with human-heads and animal bodies representing the seven main sins.  The monkey represents Greed.

The most significant historical object in the church is this medieval shield decorated with a goat head from around 1400.

We really enjoyed our tour of this amazing church!
